{"id":2167,"date":"2017-10-19T09:49:38","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T22:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thinkevans.com.au\/WordPress\/?p=2167"},"modified":"2019-01-08T13:54:12","modified_gmt":"2019-01-08T02:54:12","slug":"endless-coffee-is-great-but-time-on-planning-not-so-much","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thinkevans.com.au\/WordPress\/endless-coffee-is-great-but-time-on-planning-not-so-much\/","title":{"rendered":"Endless coffee is great &#8211; but endless time on planning, not so much"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Balancing time allocated to board tasks is yet another challenge for the board that requires compromise &#8211; between enough attention to rightful detail, and tipping over into meddling in management, for example; or between devoting enough time to well-informed planning, and investing so much time that plans far outweigh results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the board, governance and planning are very closely intertwined, and should take up the vast majority of board time &#8211; board members are not there to actually do the doing, but to think about and decide what others should be doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On that token, we&#8217;ve posted here before about the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkevans.com.au\/WordPress\/coffee-makes-planning-go-round\/\">importance of planning<\/a>,<\/strong> but recent requests from diverse organisations have prompted us to update our &#8216;governance wheel&#8217;. &nbsp;It has very much proven its worth in shaping board discussions about the annual round of planning, helping to avoiding that becoming endless, and nothing like sufficiently productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For ease of reference, we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkevans.com.au\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ThinkEvans-on-Governance-cycle.pdf\"><strong>updated our short paper<\/strong><\/a> that includes the governance wheel &#8211; enjoy it with your coffee!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Balancing time allocated to board tasks is yet another challenge for the board that requires compromise &#8211; between enough attention to rightful detail, and tipping over into meddling in management, for example; or between devoting enough time to well-informed planning, and investing so much time that plans far outweigh results.
